I remembered Fedora 10 was released in the nighth of Nov. 25th, 2008 at 22:00 pm Beijing Time, as soon as it’s available for download, my-guides.net published it’s great tutorial Fedora 10 Installation Guide, which I learned a lot from its Fedora 9 Installation Guide when I tried Fedora (Fedora 9, this is the first Linux distro I tried and installed in my entire hard disk) for the 1st time, it’s really helpful for a Linux and Fedora newbie. I didn’t sleep all the night but translated it into Chinese, to do my best to help others who wants to try the latest Fedora distro. Although I keeped translating this great guide for a whole night, but only finished its first 8 chapters, with 2 Fedora fans’ help the second day, we finally submited to my-guides.net a Chinese version.

Although Alex named his work “Fedora 10 Installation Guide”, but he taught us almost all things about Fedora 10 system configration (these are all things needed to do after Fedora 10 installed) and Fedora frequently-used software installation and configration, it’s not good enough as someone didn’t know how to install Fedora 10 in his hard disk at all, and, what’s the most important, was, he knows nothing about Chinese, and Chinese-language opensource software, so he didn’t write any howtos about that.

In the next few days after Fedora 10 released, I compiled another free PDF guide. I read the Fedora 10 realse note, and collected lots of other information about their fed back or guides after they tried Fedora 10 from BBS or forums together, and published my own PDF to the public, and updated it for 2 times.

Those days after this PDF was published to the public, my Chinese blog attracted hundreds of visitors a day for the download address, and many Fedora users helped me to spread in other forums. I didn’t ever know this kind of document is in a so large demand, but I think it’s useful for them.

Today when I visit Google Code fedora-zh project again, I found my PDF was download over 35,000 times in all after I moved it here, and this number is still counting that is to say, tens of thousands of people downloaded my PDF, I think I did a good job.

I got to know these days Fedora 10 Nears 1 Million Users Mark (here’s the official statistics), I am really happy to hear this news, as I tried to promote it in China and Chinese-speaking countries. Fedora is the distro I’d always trust, as so many people worldwide chose it, spread it, and get involved in.

BTW: I have moved my Feedburner account to a Google Account, so please re-subsribe my blog RSS feed: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/charlespeng , thanks.

It’s been coming along for so long a time, but today RPM Fusion has officially launched as the premiere third-party RPM repository for Fedora users. RPM Fusion is meraged fromDribble, Livna and FreshRPMs repositories to simplify end-user experience by grouping as much add-on software as possible in a single location. RPM Fusion is a massive third-party repository with huge number of RPM packages that can’t ship with Fedora or RHEL due to legal restrictions and/or the packages don’t comply with free software licenses.

Here below comes with a FAQ which was sent to me through Fedora mailing list:

== What applications can be found in the RPM Fusion repositories ==

The RPM Fusion project provides a variety of different applications:

=== Sound and Video / Multimedia applications ===

We have all that is needed to play all kinds of media files, such as
MP3 or unencrypted DVDs
and ship additional multimedia applications such as MPlayer, VLC and Xine.

=== Kernel Drivers ===

We offer the ATI and Nvidia closed-source drivers in a
Fedora-compatible RPM package
for users whose video cards are not yet fully supported with the stock
open source drivers.

=== Games ===

We offer couple of games such as:
* Bub’s Brothers
* Secret Maryo Chronicles
* UFO: Alien Invasion
* Wörms of Prey, xrick
* GLtron
* and lot others !

=== Emulators ===

We offer emulators for most retro platform:

* VICE for Commodore 64 and other vintage Commodore 8 bit computers
* E-UAE for Amiga
* Nestopia and FCEUltra for NES
* ZSNES and Snes9x for Super NES
* and many many others!

== More Information ==

RPM Fusion provides packages for all Fedora releases that are
supported by Fedora project, which includes the development branch
“rawhide”.

We have two separate repository lines:

* “free” for Open Source Software (as defined by the Fedora Licensing
Guidelines) which the Fedora project cannot ship
* “nonfree” for redistributable software that is not Open Source
Software (as defined by the Fedora Licensing Guidelines); this
includes software with publicly available source-code that has “no
commercial use”-like restrictions

Please read our wiki page about how to enable these repositories:
http://rpmfusion.org/Configuration

RPM Fusion is a project started by the Dribble, Freshrpms and Livna
teams. It aims to bring together many packagers from various 3rd party
repositories and build a single add-on repository for Fedora and Red
Hat Enterprise Linux. We hope to attract new Fedora packagers and hope
that other 3rd party repositories will join us.

Are you interested? Do you want to help? Don’t hesitate and subscribe
to our mailing lists at http://lists.rpmfusion.org or meet us in the
#rpmfusion channel on freenode.

==== Do you find problems? ====

Fill bugs at https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/

=== A note for Livna users ===

All users that installed Livna properly (e.g. by installing the
livna-release package) will get RPM Fusion free and nonfree
repositories enabled automatically. All packages in Livna that are
superseded by packages from RPM Fusion will soon be removed from the
Livna repositories.

== Final notes ==

Thanks for you interest in RPM Fusion.

Configuration

Upgrading from Livna or FreshRPMs:

If you have already installed Livna (livna-release package) and FreshRPMs (freshrpms-release package) or just one of them, you will get RPM Fusion free and nonfree repositories enabled automatically.

Installing RPM Fusion for Fedora 9

If you want to enable access via yum to the free repository, just type the following command:
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

If you want to enable access to the nonfree repository too, you also need to type this command:
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

Installing RPM Fusion for Fedora 10 beta:

If you installed a Fedora Beta or you use Rawhide then use the following command to enable RPM Fusion free for rawhide:
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-rawhide.noarch.rpm

And also this one if you want to use non-free too:
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-rawhide.noarch.rpm

The i686 Live is just over 700M in size, so you /may/ have trouble burning it if your media is very strict about it’s size.

Of important note, these images do have a bug in them, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468360 where some realtek network cards will not initialize properly. This bug has been fixed in today’s rawhide, which was too late for the snapshot. If you use the snapshot and fail to have networking, you’ll need to update the kernel.
